Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children. Baseball is the main cause of eye injury under age 14, (a surprising fact is that batted baseballs are more likely to cause damage than pitched balls). Basketball, racquetball, tennis and badminton, boxing, hockey, and lacrosse are also sports that frequently incur eye injuries. As eyecare professionals we advise our patients of potential eye injuries in sports and the available methods of protection against injury.
If kids accept sports glasses as part of everyday life, as bike helmets are considered the norm, protective eyewear can prevent 90% of sports related eye injury. Although athletes often have concern that sports glasses hinder sports performance, in fact, they may enhance performance. Our sports glasses have peripheral viewports, adjustable temples, and maximize ventilation to reduce fogging. Sports and safety glasses also come as sunwear.
